St Kitts and Nevis Signs Visa Exemption Agreement with Ghana

Strengthening Ties

“This was previously applicable only to holders of diplomatic and service passports. The extension now includes holders of ordinary passports,” stated Ghana’s President John Dramani Mahama during the signing of a new visa exemption agreement with St Kitts and Nevis. This landmark agreement, signed at the Jubilee House in Accra, marks a significant step in enhancing travel and diplomatic relations between the two nations.

The newly established visa exemption agreement replaces an earlier arrangement from 2018, which was limited to diplomatic and service passport holders. The inclusion of ordinary passport holders is expected to facilitate greater movement between Ghana and St Kitts and Nevis, thereby fostering closer ties.

State Visit and Agreements

The agreement was signed as part of a four-day State Visit by Prime Minister Terrance Michael Drew of St Kitts and Nevis to Ghana. During this visit, a Bilateral Labour Agreement was also concluded, aimed at facilitating the recruitment of Ghanaian medical professionals to St Kitts and Nevis. These agreements are part of ongoing discussions to establish structured labour mobility arrangements between the two countries.

President Mahama described the visa waiver extension as a ‘practical and transformative step’ in the relationship between the two countries. The partnership is part of the Accra Reset Initiative, which Mahama leads, focusing on translating sovereignty into actionable investments and shared prosperity.

Future Developments

As part of the agreements, St Kitts and Nevis has been added as a destination under Ghana’s Caribbean health worker deployment programme, which aims to address healthcare needs in the region. Prime Minister Drew is expected to attend Ghana’s 69th Independence Day anniversary on March 6, 2026, which will further solidify the diplomatic engagement between the two nations.

Discussions regarding the broader implications of these agreements are ongoing, with both leaders expressing optimism about the potential for increased cooperation. “Under the Accra Reset Initiative, I have been leading such a charge to translate our sovereignty into execution, investments, and shared prosperity,” Mahama emphasized, highlighting the initiative’s goals.

While the agreements signal a positive direction in Ghana-St Kitts and Nevis relations, the question of reparatory justice remains a global conversation. “The question of reparatory justice remains a global conversation not simply about compensation, but about recognition, repair, and the restructuring of global systems that were built on exploitation,” noted Prime Minister Drew, indicating the complexities that still need to be addressed in international relations.
