Mr. Amadu Walah, the oldest living pensioner of the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT), was honored on March 26, 2026, in Cape Coast at the remarkable age of 115. This recognition underscores SSNIT’s commitment to acknowledging the contributions of pensioners to national development.
During a courtesy visit to Mr. Walah’s residence, a delegation from SSNIT, including the Director-General Kwesi Afreh Biney and Deputy Director-General, presented items to the esteemed pensioner. Mr. Walah emphasized the importance of hard work and planning for retirement, sharing insights from his long life.
Nana Kwabena Osei Agyemang, the Asantefuo Hene of the Ogua Traditional Area, expressed gratitude to SSNIT for honoring Mr. Walah, highlighting the significance of recognizing those who have served the nation.
In his remarks, Director-General Kwesi Afreh Biney assured that SSNIT is committed to managing the Trust’s assets responsibly. “We will continue to manage the assets of the Trust diligently to sustain the Scheme and protect the interests of contributors and pensioners,” he stated.
Additionally, SSNIT announced plans to prosecute employers who fail to remit employee contributions, with a nationwide compliance enforcement exercise set to begin soon for defaulting employers. This initiative aims to strengthen the pension system and ensure that all contributions are accounted for.
Mr. Biney also commended the Finance Minister for settling SSNIT contributions for the year 2025, which is crucial for maintaining the integrity of the pension fund. However, concerns were raised by the Deputy Secretary-General of the Trades Union Congress (TUC) regarding SSNIT’s investment management practices.
The visit to Mr. Walah reflects SSNIT’s ongoing efforts to honor pensioners for their service and contributions to society. Observers expect that such initiatives will continue to foster a culture of recognition and respect for the elderly in the community.
Details remain unconfirmed regarding the specific items presented to Mr. Walah during the event, but the gesture was a significant part of the occasion.
