CLOGSAG Strike Disrupts Government Services in Ghana

CLOGSAG has been pressing for improved working conditions since 2019. The Civil and Local Government Staff Association of Ghana, known as CLOGSAG, has taken a significant step by initiating a nationwide strike on March 9, 2026. This action comes in response to ongoing frustrations regarding salary structures and working conditions that have not been adequately addressed by the government.

Current Situation

The strike has led to substantial disruptions in activities at Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) as well as Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs). Clients have been left stranded at various government offices, highlighting the immediate impact of the strike on public services.

In light of the situation, the Minister for Labour, Jobs and Employment has made an appeal to CLOGSAG to suspend the strike, urging the association to consider the needs of the public who rely on these services.

Mr. Alfred Kotei, a representative, commented on the situation, stating, “Even though the decentralised departments have a case, they should at least leave a skeleton staff to attend to clients who travel far.” This reflects the concern for citizens who are affected by the strike.

Abdul-Rashid Hassan Pelpuo, a key figure in the discussions, acknowledged the demands of CLOGSAG, saying, “CLOGSAG’s demand for a change in their salary structure is not an unreasonable demand, but remains a very huge demand.” This highlights the complexity of the negotiations ahead.

As the strike continues, Lydia Faibey, a CLOGSAG member, stated, “We are on strike. I can’t tell when we will resume,” indicating uncertainty about the duration of the action.

Looking Ahead

The government has faced criticism for delaying the implementation of a revised salary structure for CLOGSAG members, which has been a point of contention since the beginning of the negotiations. Observers are keenly watching how this situation will unfold, as the implications of the strike affect not only government operations but also the livelihoods of those who depend on these services.

Details remain unconfirmed regarding the government’s next steps in addressing the demands of CLOGSAG, but the ongoing dialogue will be crucial in determining the future of this strike and its impact on Ghana’s public sector.
