Ghana Celebrates 69th Independence Day

Ghana marked its 69th Independence Day on March 6, 2026, with a ceremony held at Jubilee House in Accra, attended by former presidents, government officials, diplomats, traditional leaders, school children, and youth.

During the event, President John Mahama addressed citizens and dignitaries, reflecting on the significance of the day. He emphasized the importance of acknowledging Ghana’s past while looking towards the future.

“This is our story. This is our moment. We cannot speak of Ghana’s present without paying homage to our past,” Mahama stated, paying tribute to Ghana’s first President, Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah.

Ghana became the first sub-Saharan African country to gain independence from colonial rule on March 6, 1957, marking a pivotal moment in the continent’s history.

As part of the celebrations, the government announced the establishment of a Women’s Development Bank aimed at supporting women-led businesses, highlighting a commitment to gender equality and economic empowerment.

Additionally, President Mahama assented to the 24-Hour Economy Authority Bill, an initiative expected to generate approximately 1,000 new jobs, furthering the government’s efforts to boost the economy.

The 69th Independence Day serves not only as a reminder of Ghana’s rich history but also as a call to action for future development and unity among its citizens.

Shirley Botchwey, a notable figure in the celebrations, extended her wishes, stating, “Happy 69th Independence Day to Ghana.” This sentiment reflects the pride and hope shared by many Ghanaians on this significant occasion.

As the nation celebrates its independence, the focus remains on building a prosperous future while honoring the legacy of those who fought for freedom.

Details remain unconfirmed regarding additional initiatives that may be announced in the coming days as the government continues to prioritize economic growth and social development.
