Liverpool is reportedly nearing a loan agreement for Barcelona defender Ronald Araujo, aiming to bolster their defensive options. The deal is understood to be a season-long loan with an option to buy the Uruguay international. A medical examination for the 27-year-old is reportedly scheduled for Sunday.
Araujo, who primarily plays as a central defender but can also operate as a right-back, is expected to become manager Andoni Iraola’s second signing at Anfield. This follows the earlier acquisition of winger Victor Munoz. The move aims to provide much-needed depth in both central defence and right-back positions for the Merseyside club.
Addressing Defensive Concerns
The potential arrival of Araujo comes as Liverpool faces several defensive challenges. Right-back Conor Bradley is expected to be out until November, while Joe Gomez sustained an injury during the team’s first pre-season match. Additionally, centre-back Giovanni Leoni has not played since suffering a cruciate ligament injury on his debut last September. New signing Jeremy Jacquet was also excluded from pre-season tour matches in the United States due to fitness concerns.
Furthermore, Liverpool recently saw the departure of Ibrahima Konate to Real Madrid. These circumstances have left captain Virgil van Dijk as the only fully-fit senior centre-back available for Andoni Iraola’s squad. Araujo’s versatility could help alleviate some of these issues, offering cover in two key areas affected by injuries and departures.
Araujo joined Barcelona B in 2018 and was promoted to the first team in 2019. He has since made 213 appearances for Barcelona. Despite his extensive experience, he reportedly lost his regular starting spot last season, with manager Hansi Flick preferring a centre-back pairing of Pau Cubarsi and Gerard Martin. Araujo was named one of Barcelona’s captains following Marc-Andre Ter Stegen’s departure in January, but he started only 11 LaLiga matches last season after taking an extended break from football in November 2025 due to what he later described as depression.
Transfer Market Activity
The loan agreement for Araujo reportedly includes a buy option clause, which is not mandatory for Liverpool. This structure allows Liverpool flexibility regarding a permanent transfer. Barcelona has reportedly given their approval for the deal, with a verbal agreement between the clubs now in place.
This transfer comes amidst a summer window that has seen Liverpool actively seeking reinforcements across various positions. While the focus has been on strengthening the wing department, with talks held for Paris Saint-Germain’s Bradley Barcola, the club also identified the need for central defensive cover. Reports indicate a significant gap in valuation between Liverpool and PSG for Barcola, who the Champions League holders value at £145m, making that deal difficult to complete at this stage.
Fabrizio Romano indicated that Liverpool prioritised a centre-back signing over a new right-back for the immediate future. However, he did not rule out the possibility of the club adding a right-back later in the transfer window. Araujo’s contract with Barcelona was extended until 2031 at the start of 2025, and he was named captain at the beginning of this year.
The 27-year-old is expected to arrive in the UK on Sunday to complete his temporary switch to Liverpool.
