Scheduled Maintenance to Impact Power Supply
The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has announced that scheduled maintenance works will take place across the Greater Accra, Central, and Tema regions on March 10, 2026. Power outages are set to commence at 9:00 am in all affected areas, with the maintenance expected to enhance service reliability and strengthen the stability of the grid.
Details of the Outages
In the Accra West Region, maintenance will focus on Anyaa Deeper Life and surrounding neighborhoods, with outages lasting from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm. Meanwhile, the Accra East Region will experience a full-day outage affecting locations such as Neoplan Circle and East Legon during the same hours. The Central Region is expected to have power restored by 4:00 pm, impacting communities like Senya township and Fetteh township. In the Tema Region, outages will occur from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm, covering areas including Jericho and Roman Down.
Context of Maintenance and Recent Events
This planned maintenance follows a significant incident where the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) recovered over 100 tonnes of stolen ECG cables in Tema on March 4, 2026. The operation led to the arrest of ten suspects, including two Ghanaians and eight Chinese nationals. The raid was conducted in collaboration with officials from the Ministry of Energy, highlighting ongoing issues with cable theft that have directly affected electricity supply across communities.
Impact of Cable Theft
COP Lydia Yaako Donkor remarked on the situation, stating, “The volume and condition of the recovered cables indicate a sustained and systematic operation targeting ECG infrastructure.” She further emphasized that “theft and illegal export of ECG cables have directly affected electricity supply across communities, businesses, and public institutions.” This context underscores the importance of the upcoming maintenance works aimed at mitigating such disruptions.
ECG’s Commitment to Service Improvement
In light of the planned outages, ECG has extended apologies to affected customers for the inconvenience caused. The company stated, “The exercises are necessary to ensure the long-term robustness of the power network and to ultimately deliver improved service to consumers across the regions.” This commitment reflects ECG’s ongoing efforts to enhance service reliability amidst challenges posed by infrastructure theft.
Looking Ahead
As the maintenance date approaches, residents in the affected regions are advised to prepare for the scheduled outages. Observers expect that these maintenance exercises will lead to a more stable electricity supply in the future. However, details remain unconfirmed regarding any further measures that may be implemented to prevent future cable theft incidents.
