Ingebrigtsen’s Triumphant Return
Jakob Ingebrigtsen, the Norwegian athlete, claimed a remarkable 5,000m gold medal at the European Athletics Championships in Birmingham. This victory marks his return to competitive racing after an injury layoff that spanned nearly a year. Ingebrigtsen underwent Achilles surgery in January and resumed training six weeks prior to the championships.
His last competitive appearance was in September at the World Championships in Tokyo, where he finished 10th in the 5,000m final. Despite his Achilles issue preventing him from competing during the outdoor season, he lined up as the two-time defending champion.
The 25-year-old secured his victory with a time of 13 minutes 15.29 seconds. This achievement brings his total to a record-equalling seventh gold medal at these championships, placing him alongside Croatian discus thrower Sandra Elkasevic.

Overcoming Doubts and Injury
Ingebrigtsen’s return to the track came 324 days after his last race. Leading up to the event, there were questions regarding his form and readiness due to his injury. He had surgery on the sheath around his left Achilles tendon in February.
Despite the challenges, Ingebrigtsen expressed confidence during the race, stating, “With 600m to go, I knew I was going to win. I was just hoping I was not going to get too tired.” He also acknowledged the personal struggle, adding, “I doubted myself every day and every minute leading up to the last lap, but I am always hoping.”
The athlete described his win as one of the greatest of his career, particularly given his journey from what he termed “the lowest of lows.” He noted that even he did not believe such a comeback was possible before the championships.
During the race, Ingebrigtsen faced a challenge on the final lap, appearing to be boxed in behind France’s Jimmy Gressier and Germany’s Florian Bremm. However, he managed to find a gap and execute a powerful sprint finish.

A Consistent European Performer
Former women’s marathon world record holder Paula Radcliffe commented on Ingebrigtsen’s performance, describing it as “a textbook example of how not to run in your comeback race.” She also highlighted the difficulty of his recovery, stating, “I can’t put into words how hard it is for Jakob to come back after that surgery he has had.” Radcliffe concluded by emphasizing his resilience, saying, “You cannot write off that man.”
Ingebrigtsen is a two-time Olympic and world champion, and his record at the European Athletics Championships remains unblemished. He has never been defeated at the event, securing all four men’s 5,000m golds in which he has competed.
His impressive streak includes 12 European finals on the track since 2019, all resulting in gold medals. His only defeat in a European track final was an indoor 1500m silver in 2019. This latest victory further solidifies his standing as a dominant force in European athletics.
Florian Bremm secured the silver medal, finishing 0.31 seconds behind Ingebrigtsen, while Etienne Daguinos of France earned the bronze. Ingebrigtsen is now the first man to achieve four European titles in the same event, and he has accumulated 17 European gold medals, including cross-country victories.
