Chavarria’s unconventional journey to Chelsea
Chelsea has officially announced the signing of Pep Chavarria from La Liga side Rayo Vallecano. The Spanish left-back has agreed to a contract at Stamford Bridge that extends until 2031. Chavarria, who is 28 years old, will join his new teammates at Cobham as the club prepares for the 2026/27 campaign. His path to an elite club has been described as unconventional, as he did not make his La Liga debut until he was 24 years old, an age when many players have already established themselves at the top level.
Chavarria expressed his excitement about the move, stating, “I’m so excited to get started. This is a dream for me as Chelsea are one of the biggest clubs in the world. It is a big opportunity but I am prepared and will work hard to help the team achieve success.” He also acknowledged the support of his family, noting, “There are a lot of people who have helped me get to this moment and I have to thank my family. They have always supported me and today is only possible because of them.”
The transfer fee for Chavarria is reported to be around £16.3m, with an additional £1.7m in add-ons, following four years at Rayo Vallecano. This move marks the biggest step in his career, bringing him from Spain’s lower leagues to one of Europe’s prominent clubs. His arrival adds depth to the left-back position, especially after Marc Cucurella joined Real Madrid in June for £51.8m.
From Catalonian leagues to La Liga success
Born in Figueres, Catalonia, Chavarria began his career with his hometown club, UE Figueres, then in the Spanish fourth tier. He made his senior debut at 18 years old against CF Peralada and developed into an attack-minded left-back over two seasons. In the summer of 2018, he moved to third-tier club UE Olot, where he quickly became a starter and a standout player, making 52 appearances before his departure.
His professional journey continued with a move to Real Zaragoza in August 2020, then in the Spanish second tier. Chavarria made his professional debut the following month, starting in a 2-2 draw with Las Palmas. After two full seasons with Zaragoza, he made the step up to Spain’s top flight by signing with Rayo Vallecano in August 2022. At Rayo, he became a dependable top-flight full-back, known for combining defensive aggression with the necessary physicality for the role.
During his time at Vallecas, Chavarria made 125 appearances for Rayo, establishing himself as a regular on the left side of their defence. His tenure at Rayo also included facing world-class managers, such as Xabi Alonso, whom he played against last season when Alonso was managing Real Madrid. In a goalless draw against Real Madrid in November, Chavarria delivered a strong defensive performance, showcasing the discipline and aggression required to handle elite attacking players. This performance reportedly left an impression on Alonso, who later targeted Chavarria after becoming Chelsea manager.
Chavarria also played a key role in Rayo’s historic run, which included back-to-back eighth-place finishes in La Liga over the past two seasons and reaching a European final. He featured 44 times last term as Rayo secured a spot in the UEFA Conference League final, where they were narrowly defeated 1-0 by Crystal Palace. His contributions included scoring once and providing three assists in all competitions last season, creating 27 chances from open play in La Liga.
A challenging transfer and strategic fit
Securing Chavarria’s transfer proved to be a complex process for Chelsea. Rayo Vallecano initially indicated they would not sell the player unless his release clause, valued at £42.4m, was met. Discussions were described as “complicated” by multiple sources, as Rayo insisted on the full payment of the release clause. The club believed the price was justified, with sources arguing that Chavarria’s underlying statistics were comparable to those of Marc Cucurella.
Rayo Vallecano was in a strong financial position, partly due to its successful player-trading model, which allowed them to resist offers. Chavarria also had four years remaining on his contract, further strengthening Rayo’s negotiating stance. Additionally, any significant profit from a sale would incur a 25% tax charge, reducing the net value of the fee received by the club.
Chavarria’s arrival, alongside new right-back Marco Palestra, who joined Chelsea for £47m from Atalanta in July, provides manager Xabi Alonso with the opportunity to implement his wing-back system. This system was instrumental in helping Bayer Leverkusen win the Bundesliga title in 2024. Chavarria’s mentality is also seen as a valuable asset; his former coach at Real Zaragoza, Jose Ramon Rodriguez, noted his dedication, saying, “He was a player who sacrificed himself a lot, who liked to train a lot. His way of training never let him down. He would always give the maximum.”
Rodriguez emphasized Chavarria’s continuous improvement both technically and in decision-making, despite his physical capacity never being in doubt. His ability to adapt to higher demands has been a consistent theme throughout his career, from the second division to La Liga. This resilience and work ethic suggest he could be a key component in Chelsea’s squad as they prepare for the upcoming season.
