On April 3, 2026, a statue honoring Magawa, the renowned landmine-detecting rat, was unveiled in Siem Reap, Cambodia. This event marked a significant tribute to the small creature who played a monumental role in saving lives by detecting explosives hidden beneath the ground.
Magawa was trained by the Belgian charity APOPO, which has been working with rodents to detect explosives since the 1990s. During his career, he cleared over 141,000 square meters of territory, showcasing remarkable efficiency by surveying an area the size of a tennis court in just 20 minutes.
Before his retirement in 2022 due to old age, Magawa had become a symbol of hope and bravery. He was the first rat to receive the PDSA Gold Medal for animal bravery, a recognition of his extraordinary contributions to humanitarian efforts.
