Ghana and St Kitts and Nevis Strengthen Ties
“This means Ghanaian citizens with ordinary passports can visit the Caribbean nation without going through lengthy visa application processes,” stated President John Dramani Mahama following the signing of new bilateral agreements on March 4, 2026.
The agreements, which include provisions for visa-free travel for ordinary passport holders, mark a significant step in enhancing cooperation between Ghana and St Kitts and Nevis. Previously, such travel was limited to holders of diplomatic and service passports, making it difficult for many citizens to visit the Caribbean nation.
In addition to easing travel restrictions, the agreements also encompass a bilateral labour agreement aimed at recruiting Ghanaian medical professionals. This initiative allows skilled workers, including nurses and teachers, from Ghana to seek employment opportunities in St Kitts and Nevis.
President Mahama emphasized the importance of unity and collaboration, stating, “We must be united, we must mobilise our common resolve, and we must develop our nations for the benefit of our people.” His remarks reflect the growing trust and mutual respect between the two nations.
Prime Minister Terrance Michael Drew echoed this sentiment, noting, “We share history.” This historical connection has fostered a spirit of cooperation, leading to agreements that also explore collaboration in tourism, renewable energy, and cultural industries.
The recent agreements are part of a broader effort to strengthen economic and social ties between Ghana and St Kitts and Nevis, showcasing the potential for South-South cooperation. Both countries have expressed a commitment to enhancing their bilateral relations through various sectors, including education, health, and trade.
As these agreements take effect, Ghanaians can expect a more straightforward process for travel to St Kitts and Nevis, which may lead to increased cultural exchange and economic opportunities.
Details remain unconfirmed regarding the timeline for the implementation of these agreements, but the commitment from both nations signals a promising future for their partnership.
