“Numerous countries have told me they’re on the way. Some are very enthusiastic about it, and some aren’t,” said Donald Trump, emphasizing the urgency for an international naval coalition to secure the vital Strait of Hormuz.
The call for a coalition comes as tensions in the region have escalated significantly, particularly following a series of Iranian attacks on ships traversing the strait, a crucial waterway through which approximately 20 to 30 percent of global oil consumption flows.
Since the onset of the conflict on February 28, more than 100 Iranian naval vessels have been sunk or destroyed, and at least 1,444 people have lost their lives in Iran alone. The humanitarian crisis has extended across the Middle East, resulting in over 2,200 deaths.
Trump identified several nations, including China, France, Japan, South Korea, and the United Kingdom, as potential participants in the coalition. However, despite the expressed interest from various countries, none have yet confirmed their involvement.
In the wake of these developments, global oil prices have surged by 40 to 50 percent, with Brent crude reaching approximately $106.12 a barrel. Domestic gas prices in the United States have also seen a significant increase, rising 24% to an average of $3.70 a gallon.
Trump remarked, “Some are countries that we’ve helped for many, many years. We’ve protected them from horrible outside sources, and they weren’t that enthusiastic,” highlighting the complexities of international alliances in times of crisis.
In response to the situation, Sanae Takaichi stated, “We have not yet made any decisions whatsoever regarding the dispatch of naval vessels,” indicating that the coalition’s formation remains uncertain.
As the conflict continues, the UK’s maritime agency has maintained a ‘critical’ threat level for the Strait of Hormuz, underscoring the ongoing risks associated with navigation through this key maritime route.
Details remain unconfirmed regarding the exact countries that may join the coalition, but the international community is closely monitoring the situation as it develops.
