Tax Deduction Controversy in Ghana’s Security Services

The Ministry of the Interior has been drawn to information circulating in the media regarding tax deductions from rent allowances. Reports indicated that a 20 percent tax deduction was applied to the rent allowances of security services personnel, leading to confusion and concern among those affected.

In a statement issued on April 11, 2026, the Ministry clarified that it does not have the mandate to deduct tax from the rent allowance of security services personnel. The deduction was carried out at source by the Ministry of Finance, which is in line with existing tax laws in Ghana.

The Ministry of the Interior urged affected personnel to remain calm, emphasizing that the government is committed to prioritizing their welfare. “We urge all personnel to remain calm and rest assured that the government will not short change any personnel and will continue to prioritize their welfare,” the Ministry stated.

Furthermore, the Ministry denied claims of responsibility for the tax deduction, reiterating that the decision was made by the Ministry of Finance. The statement was issued by the Public Affairs and Communications Unit of the Ministry of the Interior, aiming to clarify the situation and alleviate concerns among security services personnel.

As the situation develops, observers are closely monitoring the response from both ministries involved. The government’s commitment to the welfare of security services personnel remains a priority, and officials are expected to provide further updates as necessary.
