The Akosombo Dam’s complete shutdown raises a critical question: how will Ghana manage its power supply disruptions? The answer lies in the ongoing efforts to restore functionality after a devastating fire.
The fire at the GRIDCo Substation occurred on April 23, 2026, at approximately 2:01 p.m. It completely destroyed the control room responsible for channeling electricity from the dam. Richmond Rockson stated, “The switch yard, which is at the Akosombo Substation, is completely burnt down and it is not salvageable.” This incident caused extensive damage to the switch system of the Akosombo Dam.
At the peak of the crisis, more than 1,000 megawatts of power were stranded at Akosombo. Engineers have begun work on bypassing the damaged system to stabilize electricity supply. Fortunately, partial generation has resumed with one of the six turbine units operational. Additionally, two generating units have been restored following the fire incident.
The Minister of Energy, John Abdulai Jinapor, confirmed that work is ongoing to bring a third unit back into operation. He noted, “This afternoon, I received confirmation that the second unit has also been successfully synchronised.” However, concerns remain about systemic gaps in Ghana’s energy infrastructure.
Benjamin Boakye from ACEP raised alarms about potential negligence in Ghana’s power sector following this incident. About 200 transformers have been installed in April 2026 as part of a nationwide upgrade program. An additional 140 transformers are expected this week.
Officials have not disclosed the cause of the fire yet. The Minister has constituted a Technical Committee to investigate further. The outcome of this investigation may yield insights into vulnerabilities within Ghana’s energy infrastructure.
