Air Ghana has acquired a Boeing 737-400 freighter, marking a significant step in enhancing Ghana’s air cargo capacity. The aircraft landed in Ghana on May 5, 2026. This acquisition increases Air Ghana’s fleet of Boeing 737-400 freighters to three.
Air Ghana is a privately owned cargo airline headquartered at the Ghana Airport Cargo Centre in Accra. Founded in 1993, it became an operational cargo carrier in 2014 after securing its Air Operator Certificate. The new freighter is expected to enhance cargo transport services and improve delivery timelines.
Karim Traboulsi, an executive at Air Ghana, stated, “The addition of the freighter will help improve delivery timelines, reduce logistical bottlenecks, and strengthen Ghana’s position as a regional cargo hub.” This aligns with the government’s broader plans to revive national aviation.
Ghana has not operated a fully functional national airline since the collapse of Ghana Airways in 2004. The government aims to establish a new national airline by 2027 and is seeking a majority private investor for this initiative.
A task force was established in May 2025 to oversee the revival effort. Joseph Bukari Nikpe, involved in the initiative, mentioned that Ghana aims to complete the necessary regulatory processes within 12 months.
The proposed national airline will operate long-haul passenger routes alongside a dedicated cargo division. Air Ghana positions itself as an integrated logistics provider, combining air cargo services with ground handling and supply chain solutions.
The arrival of the new freighter is expected to reinforce Ghana’s growing aviation and logistics sector. With over 30 years of experience in logistics and cargo handling, Air Ghana is poised to play a crucial role in this development.
