Driver’s license: California’s data sharing raises concerns for undocumented immigrants

California plans to share driver’s license data with the American Association of Motor Vehicle Administrators, raising concerns for over a million undocumented immigrants. This data sharing could increase the risk of deportation for many individuals.

More than 1 million people may face increased risk of deportation due to the sharing of their information. The California DMV’s action aims to comply with the Real ID Act of 2005, which mandates certain standards for identification.

Georgia has begun allowing residents to use a mobile driver’s license stored in Apple Wallet for online identity verification. This feature eliminates the need for an office visit to update an address. However, this mobile driver’s license technology is currently limited to Apple Wallet users in Georgia.

The California DMV’s decision could lead to complications. If the Department of Homeland Security does not accept California licenses at airports, it may impact many travelers.

The shared information will include whether a person has a Social Security number, which could identify unauthorized immigrants. Diana Crofts-Pelayo stated, “California continues to lead in supporting immigrant families and protecting personal data from federal overreach.” Yet, Tracy Rosenberg expressed concern: “It’s unclear how extreme the danger people are being put into by this decision… it’s happening, and that’s a direct betrayal.”

California began issuing driver’s licenses to unauthorized immigrants under Assembly Bill 60 in 2013. Officials have not confirmed how this new data-sharing policy will affect those who received licenses under this law.

The implications of this decision remain uncertain. The California Legislature must approve the plan, which is expected to cost around $55 million.
