Bangladesh–india border

India plans to introduce crocodiles and venomous snakes along the Bangladesh border as natural deterrents against undocumented migration and smuggling. This controversial decision raises significant ethical and ecological concerns.

The India-Bangladesh border stretches 4,096 km (2,545 miles). Nearly 3,000 km of this border has already been fenced. The Border Security Force (BSF) has been directed to explore the feasibility of deploying reptiles in vulnerable riverine gaps along the border.

Crocodiles are not native to these riverine stretches. The swampy areas are prone to flooding, which could expose local communities to dangerous animals. Critics argue that India’s approach to undocumented migrants has been cruel and dehumanizing.

Angshuman Choudhury commented, “This would be hilarious if it weren’t sinister and dangerous.” Harsh Mander added, “These animals cannot do what the Indian state is unable to: to identify who is an ‘illegal infiltrator’.”

The relationship between Bangladesh and India has long been strained by mistrust, water disputes, border tensions, and trade imbalances. Tarique Rahman stated, “Our relationship with India or China is not a zero-sum game.” Observers are concerned about the implications of these new measures on local ecosystems.

Officials have not confirmed how or when the plan will be implemented. The deployment of reptiles could significantly alter the dynamics along the border region.
