International Women’s Day 2026
Today is International Women’s Day 2026, a significant occasion that has been celebrated for over a century. The day is marked by a global call for ‘Rights. Justice. Action. For ALL Women and Girls,’ emphasizing the ongoing struggle for gender equality and women’s rights worldwide.
The Trades Union Congress (TUC) Ghana has called for stronger action to advance gender equality, commending women for their resilience and contributions to national development. In a statement, the TUC highlighted that “When women thrive, Ghana thrives,” reaffirming their commitment to advancing rights and securing justice for women and girls.
As part of the observance, thousands of demonstrators have taken to the streets around the world, advocating for various issues affecting women. This year also marks the 115th anniversary of International Women’s Day, which was officially recognized by the United Nations in 1977, underscoring the long-standing commitment to promoting women’s rights globally.
The TUC has stressed that gender equality is a fundamental human right and has called for the ratification of key international labour standards to strengthen protections for women. These standards include the ILO Convention on Violence and Harassment and the ILO Convention on Maternity Protection, which are crucial for ensuring safe and equitable work environments for women.
Women and girls are increasingly seen as leaders of change in their communities. The Commonwealth Secretary-General has emphasized the importance of women’s leadership in climate action, recognizing that empowering women is essential for achieving sustainable development goals.
In various parts of the world, the day is also marked by poignant reminders of the challenges women face. For instance, Yolanda Diaz, a prominent figure in the fight for women’s rights, stated, “We proclaim ourselves in defence of peace, in defence of the Iranian people, in defence of Iranian women,” highlighting the ongoing struggles in different regions. Similarly, Gisele Pelicot expressed determination, stating, “We won’t give up,” reflecting the resilience of advocates fighting for justice.
As the day unfolds, observers and officials anticipate continued demonstrations and discussions surrounding women’s rights and equality. The TUC’s call for action and the global mobilization of supporters signal a collective commitment to advancing the rights of women and girls everywhere.
