University of Ghana

The University of Ghana is at the forefront of educational and health research, emphasizing the need for national self-sufficiency in these critical areas. Prof. Nicholas Tete Kwaku Dzifa Dayie stated, “Ghanaian capability exists.” This highlights the university’s role in shaping the country’s health care system.

The University of Ghana is the country’s top-ranked university overall. It offers strong education-related programs, particularly in curriculum studies and educational leadership. The university also plays a major role in educational policy research and curriculum development.

Prof. Dayie delivered his inaugural lecture at the university, where he underscored that only about two percent of Ghanaian laboratories have adequate equipment for detailed investigations. This lack of resources hampers effective research and response to health challenges.

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) poses a significant threat to public health. In 2019, 5,900 deaths in Ghana were directly attributable to AMR. Prof. Dayie described AMR as a silent pandemic that could cause 10 million deaths globally by 2050.

The Ghana National Research Fund was established to support research financing in Ghana. Its operationalisation is set for June 4, 2025, with an official launch scheduled for June 16, 2026.

This initiative aims to enhance research capabilities across various disciplines, including health care and education. The University of Ghana’s global research reputation will be bolstered by increased funding and resources.
