Jamil Abubakar Appointed to Lead Dangote Group’s Infrastructure and Logistics

Jamil Abubakar, son-in-law of Aliko Dangote, has been appointed managing director of infrastructure and logistics at the Dangote Group. His appointment took effect on April 20, 2026. He will oversee the group’s ports and trade-related infrastructure operations.

Abubakar began his career as a pilot and has accrued over 14 years of experience in the aviation sector. He is married to Fatima Dangote, who serves as a director in the group. His family ties strengthen his role within the company.

The Dangote Group operates in various sectors, including cement, fertiliser, sugar, and refining. Recently, Aliko Dangote announced plans to build a 650,000 barrels-per-day oil refinery in Tanzania. This project aims to expand the group’s influence in the region.

“As we pursue our Vision 2030 agenda, Mr. Abubakar will lead the Group’s ports and trade-enabling infrastructure platform,” said Aliko Dangote. This statement highlights the strategic importance of his new role.

Abubakar’s appointment follows changes made in February that positioned members of the Dangote family in key leadership roles. Observers expect this move will enhance operational efficiency within the group.

The planned refinery in Tanzania is set for completion within four to five years. It will significantly boost regional oil production capacity. The Lagos refinery currently produces three million metric tonnes of urea annually.

With an eye on expansion, the Lagos refinery is projected to reach a capacity of 1.4 million barrels per day after further upgrades. Yet, challenges remain as officials have not disclosed specific timelines for these developments.

Additionally, a $400 million agreement was signed with XCMG Construction Machinery Co., Ltd., which underscores ongoing investments in infrastructure projects.

“If Lagos fails, Nigeria will have problems, and we must not fail,” stated Obafemi Hamzat, reflecting the high stakes involved.

As Jamil Abubakar takes on this prominent role, stakeholders will watch closely for developments in both logistics and infrastructure under his leadership.
