Hantavirus outbreak cruise ship

A suspected hantavirus outbreak aboard the MV Hondius cruise ship has resulted in three deaths. The incident occurred while the ship was at sea in the Atlantic Ocean, near Cape Verde. At least one case has been confirmed as hantavirus.

Passengers began to fall ill after approximately three weeks at sea. Health officials have linked the outbreak to rodent exposure, which is common with hantavirus infections. Hantaviruses are primarily transmitted through contact with infected rodents.

Key facts:

  • Three people have died following the suspected outbreak.
  • At least one case of hantavirus has been confirmed.
  • The MV Hondius had around 150 passengers and 70 crew members on board.
  • Globally, an estimated 100,000 to 200,000 hantavirus infections occur each year.
  • The fatality rate for hantavirus pulmonary syndrome (HPS) ranges from 35% to 50%.

Dr. Liam Brierley stated, “It’s therefore extremely likely that these cases have resulted from the same single point of exposure to rodents.” Most hantavirus infections are still linked to direct exposure to infected rodents, according to Dr. Michael Head.

No specific treatment or cure for hantavirus exists; care is largely supportive. Currently, there is no widely available vaccine against the virus. However, health officials emphasize that hantaviruses typically do not spread from person to person except in rare cases.

Hans Kluge reassured the public, saying, “There is no need for panic or travel restrictions.” Health officials continue to monitor the situation for potential new cases. The exact source of the outbreak on the MV Hondius has not been confirmed yet.
