Hantavirus Outbreak on MV Hondius Cruise Ship

A suspected hantavirus outbreak on the MV Hondius cruise ship has resulted in three deaths and raised global health concerns. At least three other passengers are sick following this incident.

The World Health Organization confirmed that one case was laboratory-confirmed, while at least five other passengers are suspected of being infected. Symptoms of hantavirus infection can include fever, fatigue, chills, muscle aches, headache, dizziness, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, and sometimes diarrhea.

Officials have stated that hantavirus is primarily transmitted through aerosols and droplets containing rodent excretions. The most common carriers in North America include deer mice, while in South America, they are typically rice rats and vesper mice.

The MV Hondius outbreak has put the world on alert regarding hantavirus. This virus can cause severe infections of the lungs or kidneys. Hantavirus pulmonary syndrome (HPS) is fatal in nearly 4 out of 10 people who contract it.

Key facts:

  • Three people have died due to the suspected outbreak.
  • At least six confirmed or suspected cases exist among the 170 total passengers.
  • Two symptomatic crew members required urgent medical care.

There is no specific treatment for hantavirus infection; supportive care is provided instead. No vaccine for hantavirus is currently available in the United States. In fact, about 35% of people who contract hantavirus die.

Detailed investigations are ongoing, including further laboratory testing and epidemiological investigations. The critical reassurance for most people is this: scientists have not observed human-to-human transmission of the hantaviruses that circulate in the United States.

This incident marks a significant reminder that hantavirus remains a deadly global health threat.
