Arleigh Burke-Class Destroyer USS Carl M. Levin Features New Launcher

The USS Carl M. Levin (DDG-120), an Arleigh Burke-class destroyer, has been spotted with a new launcher that could enhance its operational capabilities. This unidentified launcher, first noted by the Japanese-language blog OSINFO, resembles the launch system for the White Spike interceptor from Zone 5 Technologies and is positioned at the rear of the superstructure, between the port-side torpedo tubes and the Mk 41 vertical launch system.

Notably, this launcher was not present on the USS Carl M. Levin as of December 2025. The new system could potentially be used for deploying counter-drone interceptors, drones, or decoys, reflecting the Navy’s ongoing exploration of integrating various options for counter-drone capabilities across its fleet.

Lockheed Martin has also proposed a concept for placing four-cell modules for AGM-179 Joint Air-to-Ground Missiles at the stern of Arleigh Burke-class destroyers, indicating a trend towards enhancing the firepower of these vessels. The USS Carl M. Levin is currently homeported in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, and its new capabilities are expected to contribute to the Navy’s evolving operational strategies.

Meanwhile, the USS Harvey C. Barnum Jr., another Arleigh Burke-class guided missile destroyer, was commissioned on April 11, 2026. This vessel honors Harvey C. Barnum Jr., who was awarded the Medal of Honor in 1965 for his service in the Marine Corps.

Commander Ben Cantu expressed his excitement about the commissioning, stating, “It’s just been a great, great special opportunity that is once in a lifetime.” Chief Petty Officer Courtney Dion noted the anticipation surrounding the event, saying, “Knowing the excitement that our family has for this commissioning, this is something they have been waiting for since 2016.”

As the U.S. Navy actively tests long-range autonomous systems aimed at diverting anti-ship missiles, the capabilities of the Navy’s Burkes continue to evolve. However, the exact purpose of the new launcher on the USS Carl M. Levin remains unclear, and the U.S. Navy has not yet commented on its intended use. Details remain unconfirmed.
