Ashley Cole was appointed as the head coach of Cesena FC in Italy. This development marks his first full-time managerial role.
Cole, who previously served as an assistant manager at Everton, Birmingham City, and with the England national team, expressed excitement about this new chapter.
He stated, “It is a great place to be and to start. I’m glad I’m back. We’re going to do something different — a bit special.” Cole aims to implement a high-intensity style at Cesena.
Yet, he revealed feelings of discouragement regarding the lack of managerial opportunities in England. He noted that clubs often questioned his readiness for a head coach role.
“I was getting kind of discouraged by a lack of opportunities, from some clubs in England I spoke to,” he said. He highlighted the challenge he faced with the common perception that he lacked experience.
Cole earned 107 caps for the England national football team during his illustrious playing career. He completed his coaching badges under Frank Lampard at Derby County.
His move to Italy also holds significance as it represents a broader issue within football. “I don’t think there are too many Black English coaches working in Italy, so yes, it is a massive leap of faith from them and I’m very proud to be here,” he remarked.
This appointment comes after Cole’s late-career stint with AS Roma, where he played before transitioning into coaching. His experience in Italy may benefit his new team.
