Burkina Faso

Burkina Faso’s junta leader Capt. Ibrahim Traoré has gained significant support despite a worsening security situation and increasing civilian casualties attributed to state forces. The military junta, which seized power in September 2022, has faced escalating jihadist violence and political repression.

Since Traoré’s rise to power, deaths from militant Islamist attacks have tripled. Civilians have suffered disproportionately; state forces have killed civilians at more than twice the rate of Islamist groups since 2023. Displacement in the country could reach between 3 million and 5 million people by 2026.

The junta has taken drastic measures to consolidate power. It dissolved over 100 political parties in January 2026 and scrapped the electoral commission in July 2025, citing costs. These actions align with Traoré’s statement: “People need to forget about the issue of democracy. We have to tell the truth: democracy isn’t for us.”

As the government intensifies its crackdown on dissent, two-thirds of citizens now accept military rule—a stark increase from just 24 percent a decade ago. This shift reflects growing disillusionment with traditional political structures amid ongoing insecurity.

Key statistics:

  • Population of Burkina Faso: 23 million
  • Number of political parties dissolved: 100
  • Rate of civilian killings by state forces compared to Islamist groups: 2
  • Potential displacement in 2026: 3 million to 5 million people
  • Size of the joint anti-jihadist force: 15,000 men

The junta has distanced itself from international oversight while deepening ties with neighboring juntas in Mali and Niger. In January 2026, Burkina Faso withdrew from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) after facing pressure to hold elections.

Civicus highlighted that the security situation used to justify coups has dramatically worsened. The International Centre for Counter-Terrorism warned that these dynamics risk fueling grievances and aiding violent extremist recruitment in local communities.

Traoré’s regime continues to face scrutiny for its handling of security and human rights issues as it navigates a complex landscape marked by anti-imperialism sentiments and resource nationalism.
