Dortmund needed just three more points to guarantee the runners-up spot in Germany’s top flight. However, they missed an opportunity to clinch second place behind Bayern Munich. The defeat marked Dortmund’s 2,000th Bundesliga match lost and their 1,000th away fixture lost.
Additionally, this was Dortmund’s first back-to-back away loss in 16 months. The match faced a delay of ten minutes due to Dortmund’s late arrival at Borussia-Park. Although they struggled, Schlotterbeck’s performance stood out amid the disappointment.
