Otto Addo was relieved of his duties as head coach of the Black Stars on April 28, 2026, following back-to-back defeats against Austria and Germany. Kofi Adams emphasized that the decision was a collective one, countering claims of individual responsibility.
Addo’s dismissal comes just 72 days before the opening ceremony of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The Black Stars have struggled in pre-tournament preparations, suffering four consecutive losses.
Under Addo’s management, Ghana qualified for the World Cup with a record of eight wins and one draw from ten qualifying matches. However, performance concerns led to his departure.
Carlos Queiroz has been appointed as the new head coach on a four-month contract. Ghana’s opening match in the World Cup is against Panama on June 17, 2026.
Kofi Adams stated, “I did not sack Otto Addo. There was an agreement that a meeting would be held after the Austria and Germany games.” He added that while Addo did his best to qualify the team, they expressed concerns over overall performance.
The Black Stars have been drawn in Group L alongside England, Croatia, and Panama. The upcoming matches will be critical for Queiroz as he prepares the team for their World Cup campaign.
This is not the first time Addo faced scrutiny. He was reappointed in March 2024 after leading Ghana to World Cup qualification. The Ghana Football Association now looks to regroup under new leadership.
