Zimbabwe’s New Export Ban on Lithium and Minerals

In February 2026, Zimbabwe announced a ban on the exports of all raw minerals and lithium concentrates. This decision marks a significant shift in how the country manages its rich natural resources.

Zimbabwe holds the largest lithium reserves on the African continent. In 2025, it exported 1.128 million metric tons of lithium-bearing spodumene concentrate, reflecting an 11% increase from the previous year.

The mining sector is crucial for Zimbabwe’s economy. It contributes 14.3% to the country’s gross domestic product. The government aims to boost domestic processing and value addition through this new ban.

Esther Sit noted that Zimbabwe’s lithium export ban changed how resource-rich countries approach global supply chains. The move intends to better control natural resources within the country.

However, environmental concerns have arisen. Residents of Shurugwi filed a petition asking Parliament to intervene over alleged environmental destruction caused by a Chinese company. Nongovernmental organizations accuse Chinese businesses of neglecting environmental and labor standards.

The Centre for Natural Resource Governance stated, “These violations are not just environmental; they are a direct assault on community dignity, health, and livelihoods.” They emphasize that natural resources must benefit the people.

Amid these developments, Zimbabwe is also undergoing a constitutional reform push. This effort has sparked intense debate regarding presidential term limits.

The proposed amendment could allow President Emmerson Mnangagwa to remain in office beyond the current two-term limit. Critics warn it could significantly impact how leaders are chosen in the future.

Mnangagwa came to power in 2017 after removing long-time leader Robert Mugabe. The constitution adopted in 2013 was seen as a milestone after years of political transition.

This sequence of events matters greatly for Zimbabweans as they navigate issues of governance and resource management. The outcomes will shape both local communities and national policy moving forward.
