“There’s zero incentive for MTN to steal data from you. Because it will just chase people away. It’s not something we do; it’s not part of our values,” said Stephen Blewett, CEO of MTN Ghana, addressing recent allegations of data theft.
Blewett’s statement comes amid growing scrutiny over mobile service providers and their handling of customer data. MTN Ghana has operated in the country for 30 years and remains a leading telecommunications provider. The company is currently navigating challenges in the fintech space, particularly with its MobileMoney services.
In response to compliance concerns, MTN Ghana has temporarily restricted some MoMo agent accounts. These measures are intended to protect customers, safeguard the MoMo Agents platform, and maintain trust across the agent network. This move reflects the company’s commitment to transparency and security in its operations.
MTN Group recently reported a 10% increase in monthly active MoMo customers, reaching 69.5 million by the end of December 2025. Additionally, fintech transaction volumes surged by 14.9%, totaling 23.3 billion transactions. These figures highlight the growing reliance on digital financial services among Ghanaians.
Looking ahead, MTN Ghana plans to invest US$1 billion over the next three years to expand its infrastructure. The company intends to roll out more than 800 new cell sites in 2026 alone—aiming to enhance network coverage and reliability across the country.
“We are not building for current conditions alone. We are investing for what Ghana will look like in the next three to five years,” Blewett stated, underscoring the strategic vision behind this significant investment. The expansion aims to deepen financial inclusion through mobile money services and reduce reliance on cash by expanding digital payment options.
Mobile gaming is emerging as a key growth opportunity for MTN Ghana as digital services become one of the fastest-growing segments of its business. The company is also focusing on improving network resilience by investing in additional transmission routes.
As MTN Ghana navigates these developments, it remains committed to maintaining customer trust while expanding its services. The next steps will likely involve further announcements regarding infrastructure projects and service enhancements.
