Narges Mohammadi’s health has deteriorated to a critical state, prompting urgent calls for her release from prison to receive specialized medical care. On May 1, 2026, she was transferred from Evin Prison to a hospital due to a sharp decline in her health.
Mohammadi has lost consciousness twice and suffered a severe cardiac crisis. Her family reported that her health was worsening in prison due to alleged mistreatment. They have urged for her immediate release because of her deteriorating condition.
Prior to this incident, Mohammadi was arrested on December 12, 2025, during a visit to Mashhad. She received a sentence of more than seven years in February 2026. Six years of this sentence stemmed from the accusation of ‘gathering and collusion to commit crimes’.
She had been serving a previous 13-year sentence for collusion against state security and propaganda against Iran’s government. In total, Mohammadi has been arrested 13 times and sentenced to 31 years in prison along with 154 lashes.
The Nobel Peace Prize Committee condemned the ongoing life-threatening mistreatment of Mohammadi. They stated that “her life remains in danger” due to the conditions she faces. Hamidreza Mohammadi noted that her current medical issues include low blood pressure and a heart attack.
The Narges Mohammadi Foundation indicated that this transfer was done as an unavoidable necessity after prison doctors determined her condition could not be managed on-site. The family continues to advocate for better treatment and conditions.
