One Million Coders Program Aims to Empower Ghanaian Youth

The initiative aims to equip Ghanaian youth with essential tech skills through a significant scholarship program. The One Million Coders Program offers 100,000 Google Career Certificate scholarships in Ghana.

MTN Ghana is a key partner in this effort. The company focuses on long-term youth empowerment and skills training. Georgina Asare Fiagbenu, a spokesperson for MTN, stated, “We believe in the youth of this country and we are deliberate about investing in them.”

The Adwumawura Programme complements this effort. It aims to create 10,000 youth-owned businesses annually over four years. So far, it has provided grants to 3,212 recipients, including 245 persons with disabilities.

The program has seen success in training young people. A total of 10,887 participants completed training through the Adwumawura Programme, with 6,801 males and 4,077 females among them.

Additionally, the AI Community Center in Accra opened last year to support young talent in the tech industry. This center plays a crucial role in fostering innovation and entrepreneurship.

The Adwumawura Monitoring and Evaluation App tracks the performance of funded businesses in real time—ensuring accountability and support for entrepreneurs.

Yet, challenges remain. The application portal for the next cohort of the Adwumawura Programme is expected to open soon, but no specific timeline has been shared.

The focus on digital skills aligns with global trends toward a digital economy. As technology evolves, equipping young people with relevant skills becomes increasingly important.

Each year comes with a different focus within these initiatives. However, the commitment to education remains consistent.

Officials anticipate that these programs will significantly impact Ghana’s entrepreneurial landscape. The next steps will involve ongoing assessments of participant outcomes and business successes.
